Why LobePro Pumps Are a Strong Alternative to Progressive Cavity Pumps

Certain pumps are just better suited to different applications. However, in many applications that deal with wastewater treatment or slurry, engineers are looking for alternatives to the traditional choice of progressive cavity pumps. LobePro specializes in one of the best alternative pump types for these applications–rotary lobe pumps.

Comparing the Rotary Lobe Pump and the Progressive Cavity Pump

Rotary lobe and progressive cavity pumps are both types of positive displacement pumps (PD pumps), but across several industries, more engineers are turning to rotary lobe pumps. The progressive cavity pump does still have its uses in some applications, but in many others, especially in the handling of abrasive fluids, rotary lobe pumps, like LobePro’s products, have become the preferred choice.

Let’s take a look at these two types of PD pumps and how their different attributes compare.

Size and Maintenance

A major advantage of the LobePro rotary pumps over any progressive cavity pump is our compact designs. Rotary lobe pumps as a rule tend to be much smaller and simpler to install than PC pumps, which require more space in order to handle the same volume of fluid. That compact size also lends itself to easier maintenance. If you’re going to perform repairs on a progressive cavity pump, you’ll need space to remove the larger parts, like the rotor and stator. Rotary lobe pumps are smaller, and LobePro’s pumps in particular don’t require the removal of connected piping in order to remove standard wear parts like pump lobes, seals, and wear plates.

–WWTP Lead Mechanic said, “I love this LobePro pump. It takes three guys three days to rebuild a PC pump. It took three hours to rebuild the LobePro and I did it myself. I can’t wait until we replace the other PC pumps with LobePro.”

Reduced Wear and Repair Costs

Another benefit of rotary lobe pumps is the cost and frequency of their maintenance. PC pumps experience a unique condition called ‘ragging’, where certain solids or stringy materials can get caught in the pump, causing efficiency and functionality problems. Rotary pump’s design allows these materials to pass through, and so reduce the downtime necessary to remove ragging. Our rotary lobe pumps can also be run dry for a short period of time without significant damage to the pump itself. They don’t have the metal-to-metal contact of the pin and gear joints found in PC pumps. That means less wear and tear, and less risk of premature repairs or equipment failures.

Excellent Versatility

Rotary lobe pumps shine best in applications that require versatility–fluids with higher solid content, sludge, or slurries. The progressive cavity pump does have the advantage in applications requiring more precise fluid metering or the movement of highly viscous fluids, but don’t offer consistent flow rates if the solid content gets too high. Rotary lobe pumps maintain their performance in applications with higher solids content, and better resist damage due to abrasive materials.
